Frequently asked questions
The following FAQ's may help to answer some common questions about the experiences we deliver at Wharekawa Lodge, in particular our four week experience - Kawea.
For Schools
How do I make a booking for my school?
To book your school into a Te Ata Wharekawa experience, start by completing the Booking Enquiry Form on our website or contacting our team directly by email or phone. We’ll confirm availability, discuss your group’s needs, and guide you through the next steps.
Once your preferred dates are held, we’ll provide you with a detailed Booking Pack, including enrolment forms for parents and caregivers, key information about the experience, and a timeline for returning student details. All parent communication and form collection is coordinated through your school.
How does communication between the school, the program, and parents work?
Clear and timely communication is important to us. For students participating through their school, all communication will be directed to the school, which will in turn communicate with parents and caregivers. Before the program, we provide detailed information to the school, including schedules and contact details. During the program, we maintain open channels with school staff and offer regular updates. Any urgent needs will be communicated promptly to the school to ensure parents and caregivers are kept informed through their usual school channels.
Are programs mixed gender?
Our Te Ata International program is mixed gender. For the Kawea program, each term we offer one program for male-identifying rangatahi and one for female-identifying rangatahi. This structure fosters a focused environment where participants can engage deeply without the social dynamics often present in co-educational settings.
Can you take more than 25 students per program?
To maintain the quality and depth of our programs, we limit each program to 25 students. Smaller group sizes enable more personalized attention, stronger connections among participants, and a more cohesive learning environment.
Can teachers and parents attend and supervise on a program?
Our programs are designed to provide rangatahi with an opportunity to grow independently, away from their usual environments. We provide 24/7 supervision and care through our team of qualified and experienced staff, ensuring a safe and supportive setting. This approach allows participants to fully immerse themselves in the experience, fostering personal development and resilience without direct oversight from teachers or parents.
For parents and students
What is the cost and what does it cover?
The cost of our experiences varies based on the length, specific requirements and activities. This fee typically covers all accommodation, meals, activities, resources, staff, and transportation during the experiences. The cost of each experience can be found in the APPLY section at the top.
Can parents or whanau visit?
To ensure the integrity of the program and maintain a focused learning environment, visits from parents or whānau are generally not permitted during the program. However, we can arrange special visits or meetings in advance if there are particular needs. Our aim is to ensure rangatahi have the space and support to grow independently during their time with us.
How do I communicate with my child?
While on the program, we encourage rangatahi to focus on the experience and immerse themselves in the activities. However, if necessary, we will provide parents with contact details for emergency situations. We also send updates to schools and parents as part of our communication plan.
What happens if my child has an accident or is sick while on the program?
The safety and well-being of all participants are our top priority. Our team is trained in first aid, and we have a clear protocol for managing illness or accidents. If your child becomes unwell or injured, we will immediately notify the designated contact at the school and parents, ensuring that your child receives the necessary care and attention. In cases of serious illness or injury, we will seek medical attention promptly.
Do you cater for specific dietary requirements?
Yes, we cater to a wide range of dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other specific allergies or preferences. When booking, please inform us of any dietary requirements, and we will work with your group to ensure meals are suitable for all participants. We take food safety and inclusivity seriously and strive to make every participant feel comfortable and cared for.
Can I hire gear and clothing from Te Ata Wharekawa Trust?
We offer a selection of outdoor gear and clothing available for hire to ensure all participants have the necessary equipment for the program. This includes items like waterproof jackets, boots, and other outdoor essentials. Availability is based on the program’s specific activities, so please enquire in advance to reserve any gear needed. We recommend bringing personal clothing for comfort, but our gear options are there for those who may need them.
